Deep in the heart of Borneo's forests, illegal logging is rapidly destroying the homes of orangutans. Hundreds of orangutan babies are left orphaned and homeless, but lucky for these red-haired primates, there is hope in Orangutan Island.

Founded by Danish activist Lone Droscher Nielsen, the Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Rescue and Rehabilitation Center is a protected sanctuary for these threatened apes.

Orangutan Island follows Droscher Nielsen and her team on this revolutionary project as they set up the island's sanctuary and help the orangutan infants form their own society. Unlike wild orangutans who live mostly solitary lives, this group of orangutans will be confined to an island where they will need to learn to live together cohesively in a community.
